  • Have these face masses changed color or turned darker or started bleeding?
  • Have you over-exposed your skin to sun's radiations?
  • Or, maybe you have not used sun protection for your skin, like sunscreen etc?
  • And has this resulted in growth in your skin in the form of cells that cluster to produce moles?
  • Does the pigmentation of the skin bumps & moles exceeds their boundary?

Then you may be affected by skin cancer and skin cancer surgery is a way to getting rid of it.

- What Is Skin Cancer (Skin Tumors)?

Skin cancer refers to the abnormality in the skin cells, that results in the uncontrolled growth of the cells. The reason for skin cancer is the UV radiations from the sun or from any other source. The skin cells, as a result of mutation induced by DNA damage, divide rapidly and uncontrollably causing formation of facial tumors or masses or neoplasms. In the skin, cancer can occur in three kinds of cells: squamous cells (found in skin inner lining below the outer covering), basal cells (beneath the squamous cells) and melanocytes (in the lower part of the epidermis).

- Skin Cancer Surgery Procedure

For skin cancer surgery or skin tumor surgery, different surgical treatments are available: excision biopsy surgery, Mohs micrographic surgery, and Curettage and electrodesiccation. These surgeries are applicable in the case of basal cell cancer, sebaceous gland carcinoma, malignant melanoma eyelid or squamous cell cancer.

For excision biopsy surgery, a local anesthetic such as lidocane is applied to the area of the skin containing the skin mass or skin cancer, to create numbness. Then, using surgical knife, incision is made into the skin around cancer containing region and the region is subsequently excised. To repair the wound, the surrounding skin is stitched. This surgery has a high cure rate, yet further treatment may be required.

Curettage and electrodesiccation entails using a curette- a surgical instrument- to scrape the tumor followed by using an electric needle to cauterize the remaining tumor cells. The procedure is repeated twice or thrice in the same visit and no stitches are required for healing to occur.

Mohs micrographic surgery ensures maximum removal of cancer cells, while preserving the neighboring normal cells. It involves layer by layer removal of the skin parts corresponding to cancer and subsequent examination of the layer under microscope for identification of cancerous cells, until cancer cells can no longer can be detected. This ensures margin clearance of the cancer cells – i.e. that the wound margins are free of any residual cancer cells. It has the highest cure rate.

- Recovery After Skin Cancer Surgery

Recovery time depends on the type of skin tumor surgery, the site where the surgery is performed and the quantity of skin that is removed during skin tumor surgery.

- FAQs (Frequently Ask Question)

Skin cancer refers to the growths or neoplasms or masses on the skin, which have a potential to spread locally, via lymphatic tissue and via blood. The case, however, with skin cysts is different- they refer to the non-cancerous growth in the form of closed pouches of tissue sometimes filled with fluid. Cysts occur under the surface of skin and feel smooth and, when pressed, roll under the skin. Benign skin cysts do not spread and pose no threat to surrounding tissues or life, while malignant skin cancers can pose a threat to surrounding tissue and even tyo life, when they metastasize to distant organs like the lung and the liver.

Yes, exposure to UV light can be linked to skin cancer. UV light can damage the DNA in cells directly or indirectly through the generation of chemical intermediates which cause DNA damage. UV-B rays have a higher tendency of causing skin cancer than UV-A rays. UV-A rays have a greater penetration power in the skin and makes the skin wrinkle and losing elasticity.
Skin cancer is diagnosed by the careful examination of the skin to look for moles, growth and dry patches. For having a better view of the skin, dermoscope is used which directs light on the skin, thereby helping the identification of structures in the skin. If any cancer like growth is observed, biopsy is done to remove a part of the skin that is sent for further examination for confirmation of cancer. Biopsy can be incisional biopsy where a portion of a large mass is removed to diagnose the same via pathological examination, or it can be an excisional biopsy where the entire mass itself is removed and subjected to pathological examination. An exciaional biopsy is chosen when the mass is small and not attached to vital body structures.
Skin cancer surgery is not the only option available for the treatment of skin tumor. Non-surgical methods include immunotherapy, cryotherapy, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy and radiation therapy. But, in general, skin cancer surgery is the best way to treat it and prevent recurrence – The gold standard of treatment of all suspicious skin growths and masses.
Risks associated with skin cancer surgery include wound bleeding, pain, nerve damage, scars, incomplete removal of cancer cells and recurrence of cancer.
